Ocean Dreams

When you ask students majoring in biology what they would like to study if anything was possible, more people select marine organism than any other topic.  We can\’t resist the call of the sea; even land-locked cultures imagine the oceans as places of discovery and promise.  This week and next we explore marine habitats and organisms, considering what they mean to our own species and why it captures our imaginations.

This week we are meeting the marine invertebrates in lab.  For marine aquarium enthusiasts, fish are great, but the real excitement are invertebrates like this spaghetti worm.  Normally its\’ body is hidden in the sand or in a rock, but this one is out hunting with its tentacles.  Awesome!

Behind-the-Scenes

Although we like to spend a lot of time in the field, sometimes an aquarium provides unbeatable access to organisms.

This octopus video was shot at the Hatfield Marine Science Center.

Tiny hermit crabs in a \”jewel tank\” at the Oregon Coast Aquarium.
Many of our photos and videos come from the Hatfield Marine Science Center and the Oregon Coast Aquarium, both located in Newport, Oregon.  Hatfield is free to the public and has a strong educational and research mission.  The Aquarium is not cheap, but has a unique focus on the Pacific Ocean habitats close to Oregon.
