Guide 6 Extinctions Objectives

This guide’s quiz has four questions; one matching each objective.

Mass Extinctions

Describe the mass extinctions of the past and compare them to current extinction causes and rates; explain how a genetic bottleneck can occur and how it can lead to extinction; and provide a representative species that has experienced a bottleneck event.

Endangered Species

Share multiple examples of endangered species, including why the species face extinction.; describe attempts being made to study and/or preserve endangered species; and provide characteristics of birds commonly called “raptors” and explain why these species are often at risk for extinction.

Managing Species

Indicate the characteristics of “pest” animals and describe the impacts they have on humans and human products; provide examples of invasive species, including how they have moved and the impacts they have on endemic species; and explain the technological steps being taken to revive extinct species from genetic samples.

Coevolution

Define coevolution and give examples of species that are impacting each other over time, including origins of eukaryotes; provide examples of symbiosis, including parasitism, mutualism, and commensalism; and summarize the structural characteristics, representative organisms, and ecosystem significance of cnidarian species.

Complete all four sections and take the quiz on Canvas.

Use the learning objectives above to guide your studying.

Journal Assignment #11

Introduced in the Endangered Species section of this guide:

Journal Page #11: Extinction Opinion

This journal assignment is an opinion piece.  An opinion is a belief, view, or evaluation (judgment) about something, that does not have to be based in fact or knowledge, but sometimes is.  This is what you think or believe about something.  We all have opinions, and they drive much of how we interact with the world.  Sometimes it is useful to stop and reflect on opinions: what they are and why we have them.  There was a brief opinion question on a previous quiz, this is an opportunity to produce a more substantial opinion statement.
You are giving your opinion in response to the question:  Does it matter if species go extinct?
Questions that may assist in formulating your opinion statement: does it matter if the species is an animal vs. plant, vertebrate vs. invertebrate, macroscopic vs. microscopic?  How do you weigh the human need for land and water vs. other species’ needs?  How should we weigh benefits for our current generations vs. future generations?

This assignment is not graded on what your opinion is, the grading is based on:
  • Clear description of extinction, including why is is an issue open for debate and differing views.
  • Statement of personal opinion, including possible basis for the opinion.

Journal Assignment #12

Introduced in the Coevolution section of this guide:

Journal Page #12: Cnidarian Tank

Journaling is not only about observing and reflecting on the real world, it is also a place where people plan and “daydream,” thinking of possibilities.  Many people think about some day having a marine tank, and cnidarians are often featured organisms.  In this assignment you are sketching your own “dream” marine tank with at least two different cnidarian species featured.
You can add other species if you like, fish, decorations, etc.  The tank can be any shape or size you want.  You can use the videos on this page as references.  Have fun with this, journaling can confirm knowledge and be enjoyable.
You are turning in a sketch of a marine tank that includes at least two different cnidarian species.  Provide labels or a comment if you think any parts or organisms need additional information or clarification.

Journal Page Directions

To be completed after taking the quiz on Canvas.

Upload your two journal pages to Canvas.  If the files are really large, it may help to host it on a webpage and submit the web link to reduce upload time.

All three assignments are due by Friday 11:59 p.m. P.S.T.  Once you have taken the quiz on Canvas and uploaded your two journal pages, you have completed this guide.
